Change the firmware - Rock Box

Rock Box it’s an Open Source OS, Linux based for mp3 players, very easy to use and customizable.

It works on iPod( 1st through 5.5th generation, iPod Mini 1st and 2nd generation and 1st generation of iPod Nano), Archos (Jukebox 5000, 6000, Studio, Recorder, FM Recorder , Ondio and Recorder V2 ), Cowon ( iAudio X5, X5V, X5L, M5 and M5L ), iRiver ( H100, H300 and H10 series ), SanDinsk ( Sansa c200, e200 and e200R series ), Toshiba ( Gigabeat X and F series )and other popular mp3 players.

It puts a boot loader so you can chose what SO to use when you start you’re player. Remember it dosen’t erase the original firmware, you have the ability to switch between.

The main futures beside the ones in the standard OS from the producer are:
- create custom playlists directly from the player, On-The-Go playlist creation;
- Text editor (novel), Calculator, games like Dune, Black Jack, Bubbles and many more, a lot more then the standard games and as a Linux based open source it’s very extendable you can install other apps;
- it supports 15 formats of audio codecs;
- very complex audio settings ( 5-band fully-parametric equalizer, and crossfeed );
- Last FM support ;
- MPEG video support;

To install it simply go to www.rockbox.org and download the installer, you have a manual and a forum for support.
